Spoke & Stringer have been a favourite of mine since their opening in summer 2015. They’ve probably got the best spot in Bristol, down in a little harbour side nook opposite the SS Great Britain. When the weather is just right it’s the kind of spot you don’t want to leave. They serve breakfast, lunch plus an evening pintxos and tapas menu. You really could pitch up there all day if you wanted to!
Lately, the Bristol food scene has exploded. It’s an exciting time to be here. With all the best will in the world I’m still struggling to keep up with all the openings! Forgive me Spoke & Stringer, I’ve had to neglect some favourites in favour of doing the rounds of newbies. The brunch menu down at Spoke & Stringer is killer, proof is in the pudding because they just won best breakfast at the 2016 Bristol Good Food awards. Did you know they did tapas too?
I dropped by Spoke & Stringer to sample their new tapas menu. It’s filled with seasonal highlights, such as mackerel with blood orange and charred leeks and seared scallops with Jerusalem artichoke puree, Iberico pancetta and black truffle oil. And come to think of it those were the stand out dishes for me, I love it when a restaurant works a menu around the seasons. I nearly always order the patatas bravas where available, Spoke & Stringer’s definitely holds up to some of the best.
Just look at those scallops! They’re a thing of beauty, aren’t they?
Oh and the mackerel too…
The photos may fool you into thinking it was a summer’s day, I could’ve fooled myself to be honest. I sat by the window feeling the warmth of the winter sun on my face and taking in the view of the harbour. Now I can’t guarantee the weather, but booking yourself in for an evening of tapas with Spoke & Stringer is one sure fire way to bring the seasons forward.
Spoke & Stringer are available for evening bookings of tapas Wednesday through to Saturday from 6.30pm. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
