Oh Summer, where did you go? I know it’s not supposed to be over yet. The rain has been more frequent than the sun lately. Just last week I spent a lovely afternoon with Mona strawberry picking at Primrose Vale Farm. It rained either side of it but I was lucky enough to enjoy a dry spell there!
Being from Bristol it seems a crime not to visit Cheddar Valley for strawberry picking. Unfortunately, I seemed to have missed that boat as it’s (literally) slim pickings over there now. I was greatly delighted by what was left at Primrose Vale Farm though. Not just strawberries either. You can help yourself to raspberries, blackberries, red currants, blackcurrants and much more. I’d recommend checking in with Primrose Vale’s Facebook page, where they update daily, it’s like a weather report for fruit picking! Even if you’ve missed the strawberry season, it’s a good indication of what else they might have going.
There’s something oddly therapeutic about wandering up and down the bays, looking for the juiciest, biggest, brightest looking fruit you can find, enjoying the quiet. Everything felt still, it was bliss.
After you’ve picked and paid, the best bit is obviously eating them! Not all were scoffed on the journey home, which is somewhat surprising given how much I love strawberries at this time of year. In fact, I seem to be left with quite a few. So what next? Strawberry jam? Shall I freeze them? I don’t have long to figure it out. They won’t be going to waste, that’s for sure.
