The Athenian, Bristol
Slowly, but surely, I’m making my way around the shipping containers of Cargo 2. The Athenian next on my hit list.
Since seeing the review from Bristol Bites earlier in the summer, I knew I had to get my hands on one of those souvlaki wraps. Stuffed with tasty charred pork, grilled halloumi, tzatziki and wait for it…chips! Not even one for chips usually but this combo really is just so tasty.
We tried a mezze board, with a selection of four dips and plenty pittas for dipping. The dips had a few pleasant surprises I hadn’t heard of or even tried before. Tzatziki, which you’re probably already familiar with. Olive tapenade, always a favourite. Tirokafteri, a spicy feta dip that blew my mouth off but I still couldn’t stop going back for more! And finally, melitzanosalata, which I have absolutely no clue how to say but I can tell you it’s a traditional Greek aubergine based dip. Delicious too. They all were!
For me, the star of the show was hands down the souvalki. It’s really filling and good value at around £6 a wrap. More casual fast lunch food than anything else but there’s always a time and a place for that, isn’t there? The Athenian offer a loyalty card as well (such a sucker for those) and there’s no doubt I’ll be earning those stamps for a free lunch in no time at all.
